Tattoos may arouse various reactions and emotions in people – some might think along the lines of “prison” or “sailors”, but to others it might represent art. Both Ivan Kasaj and Karol Mruškovič from the publishing house Covenant Publishing are fans of the second option. They have brought us the very rare publication about tattoo art in Slovakia entitled Tattoo Portraits Slovakia.

“For quite some time now, tattoo has been a bit of a passion of ours and after books about illustration, graphic art and photography, this was a clear choice. We wanted to break down the taboo surrounding tattoos and put it to the general public’s attention in a different light. With the help of talented photographers we sought to bring inspiration through authentic stories about interesting people with original tattoos. That was also the reason why we chose Kamil Aujeský as the editor for the process of creating this book, who is very “much at home” when it comes to this topic”, says Ivan Kasaj. The book, which includes inspiring stories and evocative photographs, is a collection of 30 various attitudes to the tattoo phenomenon and shows a great variety of beauty. It documents an interesting point of view through the camera of different photographers.

The launch of Tattoo Portraits Slovakia was held in the industrial ambiance of the Kabinet showroom on July 23. It was supported with a concert by Rockefellas, as well as an exclusive live tattoo sessions with the famous tattoo studio Bodliak from Žilina.

The fact that this book saw the light of the day was very much also thanks to partners such as MINI Slovakia, Red Bull, Europapier, Castle school, Aurix production, Veryberry and korektorka.sk.

“Tattoos are a form of expression about the self and generally speaking, they are quite personal. This book offers a great opportunity to learn more about this kind of art and the stories behind tattoos – without any prejudice”,says Jared Acquaro, who launched the book and who is also an author of the blog A Poor Man’s Million.

Covenant Publishing is a publishing house from Trnava, which has already successfully brought out 3 books that helped to highlight the young talent from across graphic design, illustrations and photography from around Slovakia.
