Jana did an amazing shoot with Amanda Koh, a Singapore-based yogi whose energy is as colourful as her tattoos.
Hi Amanda, tell our readers more about you.
Well I grew up and currently live in Singapore, but for me that is more a geographical location than a place of cultural identity.
We hear you teach yoga. What kind of yoga and how did that start out?
Yes I do. I teach Hot yoga, Kalari yoga, Yin yoga and Pilates. It started out because I really enjoy yoga and I was looking to make my work my passion. Things fell into place and I met the right people at the right time and somehow ended up with this life. No regrets.
Inspiring. What is your most memorable experience as a Yogi?
My first Bali spirit festival in Ubud a few years ago. I felt like I had found my international community and felt that I had a place to call home.
Let’s talk about your ink. What was your first tattoo and why?
The first tattoo I got is the lotus flower on my lower back. Now we can go into lies saying I did it because I was in love with yoga, but the real reason is that I like tattoos and that’s why I got a tattoo. The lotus flower and yoga was the excuse, haha!
Lol. How do your students react to your tattoos?
I think they are all so used to it that they don’t see it anymore. It’s part of me.
If you had to choose a yoga pose that emulates you best, what would it be and why?
My favourite yoga pose is savasana. Because… Savasana!
Wow, I wouldn’t have guessed from the poses in your shoot =)
Any advice for yoga beginners?
Know that it’s ok to not be perfect and that when you first start out, you will suck. But gradually you will know yourself better and the yoga will make sense, and when the yoga makes sense, life will make sense. Then awesome things will happen.
Time to get my mat out of the closet.
