Meet Deborah, a model from Brazil who tells us how being herself has gotten her far in life.
Hey Deborah! Tell us more about yourself
Hi! I’m 19 years old, and I was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I’m a model and I travel a lot but I spend most of my time in Sao Paulo.
What made you choose modelling as a career?
I never really aspired to be a model. It was something that just happened. When I was younger, an agency spotted and me took care of me, introducing me to the world of modelling. Everything happened very quickly and before I knew it, I was a professional model
Wow, it’s like you were meant to pose for the camera In your experience, how have your tattoos played a part in your work?
My tattoos always distinguished me. It was not always in a positive way but I love them. I had an early love for the art of drawing and always wanted to carry it on my body. In the beginning, of course, none of my agencies saw something positive when they looked at my tattoos, but I always put my wants and personality above all work. And it worked! I like working with different styles, alternative looks, something more underground and different.
What’s your worst experience so far, being a model?
Probably the worst experience working as a model in Brazil is that many clients want models to work for free, and only pay a disclosure fee to the agency! It happens a lot. Often the work is great and for that reason they think we models we should work for free. As far as I can, I try to be firm if there is anything that I can do about it.
Sounds tough! We’re glad you stick up for yourself though! Any advice for our readers?
Of course! I think we should all be ourselves! The world is lacking people who are real. Do not be a machine. Do not be fake. Awaken the best of yourself and you’ll find that by being firm in your beliefs, in who you are and in what you stand for, others will take you more seriously.
